GPT-6.1 Terra
The focus of OpenAI's latest release, GPT-6.1 Terra, centers on visual reasoning and computer utilization.
OpenAI announced, "We’re introducing GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use alongside clearer, more natural writing."
This iteration represents a substantial advancement over GPT‑5.6 Terra, showing particular strength in daily work tasks involving communication and computer operations. These tasks range from drafting proposals and interpreting technical drawings to editing videos and completing forms.
Terra occupies a middle ground within the Anthropic model collection, similar to Sonnet—it isn't the cheapest nor the most costly, which can complicate decisions about when to deploy it.
Ted Sanders of OpenAI offered insight on Hacker News: "In the case of GPT-6.1 Terra, I'd say Terra is probably better than Astra and Sol at technical communication, similar on vision and computer use (but much faster!), and a bit worse on most other things."
For API developers, it presents a solid mid-range choice, offering more intelligence than Luna while costing less than Sol (especially concerning vision, computer use, and communication). Subscribers might find it useful if they are near usage limits, or if they seek faster computer use or clearer communication.
Regarding cost, GPT-6.1 Terra is set at $1/million input tokens and $5/million output. This pricing is nearly half that of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol, yet it is about ten times pricier than GPT-6 Luna.
