OpenAI raises top bug bounty payout to $172,000, adds bonuses for researchers
Independent researchers are now incentivized to locate flaws in OpenAI's software through a boosted bug bounty program, which features enhanced bonuses for submitting superior reports.
The maximum payout for discovering a security flaw has been elevated to $172,000 by OpenAI. This initiative works alongside OpenAI’s Defense Factory, a system where internal engineers utilize the organization's models to both discover and replicate weaknesses, as well as to validate patches.
On average, the central points within the reward tiers for findings categorized as medium, high, and critical have seen an increase exceeding fourfold. Researchers are encouraged by the program to handle the disclosure of any discovered vulnerabilities in a responsible manner. This updated bounty structure, which now includes bonuses, was announced, with the details first surfacing on Help Net Security.
Why it matters
This signals a heightened focus by OpenAI on proactive security testing within its software ecosystem. Developers should note this increased incentive structure as it impacts the landscape of responsible disclosure for AI tooling.
